Meet Chip Schulte Founder & President of Beach Cities Volleyball since 2000

Chip graduated from Palisades High School, received his Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Economics in 1969 from California University, an MBA from Rutgers University in 1971, a CPA License in December 1972, and an MPI from USC in 1978. He served as President/CEO or as CFO of six business entities from 1974 to 2000, when he started Beach Cities Volleyball. He is married to Sarah Purcell Schulte, and has two sons and a daughter, 8 grandchildren, and one stepson.
In Chip’s words: “Tony Mayrie, Don Shaw and I started things at tryouts in October 1999. We had four players at the first tryouts but worked hard and were able to provide programming for four teams the first year, and then 10 teams the second year. Since then we have faced a global recession, global pandemic, and 10,000 bumps in the road, but with God’s blessings are still going. As with any endeavor of this nature, the coaches and wonderful families who have been part of the Beach Cities Volleyball have made this all occur.”
“The Mission Statement of Beach Cities Volleyball is to ‘Teach life skills and volleyball skills from 8 to 18’. The priorities are to have fun, teach volleyball skills, and act as positive role model. Our beginning players become Intermediate players, our Intermediate players become Advanced players, and our Advanced players have strong opportunities for a future that includes college volleyball careers.”
Chip has coached 12 Smack for 22 seasons; over 160 players on is past teams have gone on to high school volleyball careers, and his former players have had successful careers at colleges across the nation.
Hi Awesome Beach Cities Families!
- The season is starting! As I leave my office and walk out to the volleyball courts, the enthusiasm, growth and happiness of young volleyball players, boy athletes and girl athletes, what I see truly creates wonderful memories every night.
- Congratulations to Dede Carranza, who made First Team All American as a libero for Claremont McKenna college. (THE BEST LIBERO INTHE NATION!!!) Dede played for Beach Cities for nine seasons, from the age of 10 until 18. She graduated with honors from Vistamar, achieved great grades and a volleyball scholarship to one of the best schools in the country. I personally coached Dede for four seasons (including three school seasons), and her success is a tribute to hard work (especially when she played on my teams) and happy times during these years. She will graduate this June and start her career with a prestigious Big Four CPA firm. Thanks for the memories, Dede, we am far happier for having you, and your family, in our lives.
- Several of our Boys teams traveled this past weekend to Las Vegas for the annual Winter Formal, a tournament wherein the best teams in the nation compete to see how they match up against the Southern California teams. Congratulations to Max Garris’ 18 Black team, who took 10th place among the 10+ best teams in the nation and Sadiq Kagzi’s 16 Black team who took 5th (!) in the 16s Division, and Kevin Williams’ 12 Black team who took 2nd Place (i.e., the Gold Finals!) in the 12’s Division! As the High School Boy’s teams are starting the wind down their first half, our Girls teams will start up, and then everyone will be playing from mid April on.
- Family Night is coming up January 21st
- 1) We are starting up a new program with TORQ, which will allow live streaming of tournaments, performance and skill videos and much more. Players and families are invited to Family Night to learn what is available and how to max out the opportunities. Former baseball great Jake Baer will be presenting, and you can get some information on the TORQ website. TORQ is a cutting edge opportunity that will allow families to create visual memories of their players from their first experience on a team at Beach Cities Volleyball forward. For High School players TORQ will help your players market their talents to college coaches across the country, as well as help them choose the best college for them (whether they want to play volleyball in college or not).
- 2) In competition, skills training is crucial for successful athletic performance. In competition, Mental Performance is a crucial element to maximize skills, and athletic success. That being the case, the fabulous, cutting age Deanna Schneyer, Best-Selling Author & Founder of The Winning Element. is running our Mental Performance Training program. Every child who actively participates in this program will develop skills to thrive, on and off the court. Deanna will be at our Family Night to explain the program & how to maximize the opportunity.
- The Family Night presentations and the season-long programs themselves are free to all players on teams at Beach Cities Volleyball. Additionally, for the high school teams, a representative of “College Funding Solutions”, will speak & introduce how she can help families with the burdensome cost of college.
- Family Night will be held at LA Galaxy on the following schedule:
- 6:00 PM: 14 & Under Boy and Girl team athletes and families
- 6:45 PM: High School Girl team athletes and families
- 7:45 PM: High School Boy team athletes and families
- Thanks for being part of Beach Cities Volleyball. See you on the court!
Respectfully, Chip Schulte
Hi Awesome Beach Cities Families!
- It is starting! Welcome to the 2024-25 edition of Beach Cities Volleyball. As the purveyors of volleyball skills and wonderful memories, we are excited that you are part of the Beach Cities Volleyball Family!
- The first series of qualifiers, for our twelve Boys teams, were played over the last three weekends. Congratulations to the spirited competitive spirit and skills displayed by all our teams. In particular our 12 Black team, coached by Kevin Williams, went undefeated until the very last match, to end up in 3rd place in their entire 12 & Under Age Group. All of our teams played well and showed that they will have an excellent season.
- For the next two weekends (Oct 26 & 27, and Nov 2 & 3) our High School Age Boys will play in tournaments, the 12s/13s & 14 Boys teams will play the following weekend of 11/9 & 11/10.
- Beach Cities is part of the Southern California Volleyball Association, one of the largest of the 31 Volleyball Associations in the United States. Our Boy’s teams have the opportunity of playing in the SCVA or SoCal Cup tournaments. This season our Boys teams are competing in the SoCal Cup, which has currently become the larger of the two (SCVA or SoCal Cup). This offers our players somewhat stronger competition, and the opportunity of playing in tournaments just down the road in Seal Beach, rather than in distant gyms in Riverside or San Bernardino Counties.
- Meanwhile our Girl’s teams are competing in the SCVA. The Girl’s teams are playing in their school season, so their tournaments start a little later to avoid a Club-School team conflict. The 8th grade & Under initial Girls tournament will be on November 9th, and the first High School Age Girls tournament is December 7th & 8th. The Girls teams will then continue their tournament season until the end of May. To avoid the same Club-School conflict with the Boys teams, the High School Boys teams will stop play in mid January, and pick up again in a very active tournament time period starting in May.
- Again, I hope you are all had a pleasant Mother’s Day and are having a wonderful May. I look forward to talking to you next week!
Respectfully, Chip Schulte

I hope all of you are having a nice Spring, cool as it has been. I usually move my team’s Saturday practices from the gym to the beach, on the “Spring Forward Day”, which was March 10th, but this year the temperature has been in the high 50’s or low 60’s on Saturday mornings at 9AM, so we have continued to practice in the gym.
